ABOUT ME
My name is Sam Parsley and I’m on a mission to help research-led writers of all kinds put joy back into their writing lives and achieve their goals – or more! Helping and inspiring others is my superpower, research-led writing is my passion, and the two come together in Curious View Coaching. I live in a little house on a hill on the south coast of England with a dream to move to Wales and run a writing-retreat centre with my husband Drew, who makes beautiful furniture for a living. I am a huge fan of daily yoga, afternoon naps, and techno music although not usually at the same time.
I’ve been coaching research-led writers since about 2007, with my trademark blend of straight -talking compassion. I recently decided to make this my vocation and am currently studying for an International Coaching Federation (ICF) Diploma. I’ve been a research-led writer since my student days in my mid 20s when I had two young sons alongside a part-time sales job, so I’m no stranger to balancing competing demands and creative time-management. I’ve now published around 62 articles and press pieces, and 3 books on subjects as diverse as electronic music production and DJing, visual culture, managed fun, pregnancy, smell in the workplace, iPods, drug-testing, flashmobs, accountants’ professional identities, aesthetics at work, workplace bullying, and Christmas. A self-diagnosed neophiliac, (and officially diagnosed ADHDer) I’m a firm believer that research and writing should be fun and I’m excited by the new and different… I’m living proof that you don’t need to be pigeonholed to be successful!
My love for the craft was ignited by researching and writing my BA(Hons) Business Studies dissertation when I dived into the topic of emotional labour in call centres and stayed fascinated with the emotional and aesthetic side to work as I investigated ‘fun at work ‘for my PhD thesis. I used photography as a research method during that project which unexpectedly evolved into something I’d write about for years to come, leading to Professorships at the University of Essex in 2010, Cardiff University in 2015, and Portsmouth in 2018.
As well as a coach and a writer, I’m ‘Dovetail’ - a DJ and music producer championing gender equality in the electronic music industry through my project In the Key, and I’m part of the team that put on Deevstock each year, a boutique festival in the English countryside. My latest book Minor Keys: Gender, Inequality and Work in Electronic Music is about to be published by Bristol University Press.
